A short film made by a farmer in southern Vietnam has won the 7th position at a filmmaking contest for farmers around the world.
Muoi Nen (L) is seen making his film with the guidance of young director Trinh Dinh Le Minh in Long An Province, located in southern Vietnam.
Muoi Nen (Mười Nên), a farmer from Long An Province, secured the position at the “YouFarm” competition held by German multinational chemical and pharmaceutical company Bayer Group with his film “The Farmer and His Son.”
In July, Muoi Nen’s film also took home the highest prize in the national round of the contest.
“I have never dreamed of the first prize,” Muoi Nen was quoted as saying on the Facebook page of the national round. “I had no idea what filming is and now my film ranks 7th in a global competition.”
“It’s a great honor,” he added. “My film has been shown to the world, I would not wish for more.”
The “YouFarm” contest under the motto “Farm ‘n’ Family” aims to improve public understanding of the role of farmers in today’s society while enhancing awareness of topical agricultural issues such as food safety and sustainable farming, through films of three minutes in length.
It received nearly 100 film entries from across the globe.
Beside Muoi Nen’s “The Farmer and His Son,” two other films made by Vietnamese peasants, also from Long An, made it to Top 20 among 44 films from 22 countries cherry-picked for the contest’s shortlist.
They are “Develop Father’s Rice and Homeland” by Muoi Thanh which ranked 12th and “Technology and Farming” by Bay Uoc which was in the 20th position.
The films were made in Vietnam around May with help from three emerging local directors, Ta Nguyen Hiep, Trinh Dinh Le Minh, and Nguyen Huu Tuan.
Bayer Vietnam is scheduled to hand out the prizes to the Vietnamese amateur filmmakers at the end of October.
