Hunting wild honey in central Vietnam

To collect wild honeycombs in the woods, hunters have to climb up trees tens of meters tall or cling to the rocks to poke the beehives.

Wild honey hunters in the central province of Nghe An said the home to wild beehives is the forest in Que Phong District. To reach the location where there are many beehives, they have to walk through a long trail with many slippery slopes and wade through deep streams.

The tools used to collect beehives are knives, nets, vines, lighters and bamboo baskets to keep honey.

A beehive hunter named Lo Van Hai said the job is quite dangerous.

There are two species of honey bees in this area, one with nests on the tree and one building hives on cliffs. The best time to seek beehives is from the 4th to the 8th lunar months.

Many beehives are located on the tops of tall trees.

"You should not speak the word bee while you are climbing to the tree and you also should not scream when you are stung by a bee. It’s our taboo," said bee hunter Vi Van Hoa.

Upon having access to the hive, hunters will use smoke to repel bees to take the hive.

It is extremely hard to take honeycombs from the cliff.

Hunter Lo Van Man, 40, said hunters always leave the part of the hive with the pupas so that the bees will not leave the hive. "We try our best to not harm young bees and to help bees regenerate," he said.
